Ever thought an electric truck fan can generate more horsepower? Flex-A-Lite has a simple method to reducing engine load and improve cooling to add more power.
Nitrous, superchargers, programmers and cat-back exhaust systems are some of the more common methods to add power to your truck. But did you ever realize that by simply reducing the load placed on the engine, you can increase horespower by as much as 27 hp and 31-lbs.-ft?
If this sounds too good to be true, then think about why racers use underdrive pulleys and why a race car does not have air conditioning. The simple reason is to reduce the load placed on the engine so that more of the power is transmitted to the rear wheels.
The same holds true for your engine's clutch driven fan. It's big. It's heavy and it robs your engine of horsepower just by turning it. Flex-A-Lite, an aftermarket perfomance company has found that by eliminating the clutch fan and substituting it with a powerful and smart, electric fan, additional horsepower gains can be made. Some of the company's dyno testing shows that gains of 20-horsepower and up to 30 lbs.-ft. of torque are possible, depending on the application.
Typical electric replacement fans range anywhere from $100 for a simple electric fan to $500-$550 for a "smart" fan that controls the amount of airflow depending on how you set the temperature controls. Furthermore, "smart" fans can also switch to 100% air flow when in towing mode or when the air conditioning is kicked on.
The great advantage to adding power via an electric fan is that you never have to retune your engine or make additional modifications as you keep adding more performance items. For the most part, releasing extra horsepower and torque while improving the longevity of your engine is a great payoff.
